The eye is always drawn to a bold red, especially when it stands alone. When one has charisma, it’s not size but energy that counts. This image was created from a photograph of a single birch branch which was digitally manipulated into a collage then overpainted with digital ink for a decorative element. The composition draws the eye to the center where the red vibrates. Red is such a beautiful bully!
After a childhood consumed by dedicated doodling, Suki studied drawing and painting at Kansas City Art Institute, earning a BFA. After graduating, she traveled the world to study Transcendental Meditation and taught the technique for years. Suki also enjoys a creative outlet in the literary arts. In 2014, she won First Place in the Women on Writing Flash Fiction Competition. In 2016, she won First Place in the Faulkner Literary Competition, Poetry Division. She works impulsively with underlying intent - throwing down colors and shapes then conferring with them to see what they want. Is it contrast, harmony, a statement, something absurd? A very cool image and observation on the color red. Many years ago an art instructor told me that in just about every masterpiece, the artist will include at least a small area, garment, or object painted red or a value of red. She said, when you take the red out, it substantially changes the impact of the painting. I should pretty use more red. : )
Suki Michelle replied:
Red is blood, war, center of the target, anger, a rose, a cherry, a bright crayon, fingernails. Red. James, thank you so much!!
